Summer Fun in Sedona - 10 Ways to Cool Off in Sedona this Summer

Whether you're bringing the whole family, looking for a romantic getaway or an adventure in the red rocks, head to Sedona for cool nights and fun days! We've got 10 ways for you to beat the heat and COOL OFF in Sedona during this HOT summer. And remember, its always cooler up here! We're averaging 95-100 degrees right now in the sun. Head up Oak Creek Canyon and it gets even cooler. If you're hot, just jump in the creek or a lovely swimming pool at your hotel/resort of choice to cool off.

#1 Take a Jeep Tour!

Try a famous Pink Jeep Tour up Schnebly Hill Rd. for mind-blowing red rock vistas or climb red rock stairs on four wheels on the Broken Arrow Tour. Sign up for Pink Jeep's e-newsletter at http://www.pinkjeep.com/ and you'll receive insider info on deals, discounts and coupons to save money on their tours.

Want a real western experience? Hop on a Red Rock Jeep if you want to ride with the Cowboys & Indians of the real "out west." You don't have to wear your silver spurs or cowboy hat - just come ready to have fun!

#2 See the red rocks from above - there's no better way to see Sedona!

Sky Safari Helicopter & Biplane Rides take you up above Sedona where you come literally come eye to eye with the highest peaks and the lowest valleys of our scenic Red Rock Country. You will be in awe the entire time. I've actually flown in a Red Rock Biplane and I really mean it when I say you haven't seen Sedona 'til you've seen it from the sky!

#3 Rent a scooter and explore Sedona!

Sedona's going green! Save gas, save money and save the environment. There's is no Driver's License required to ride an electric bicycle so this is fun for the entire family! If you want more speed there is no better way to enjoy the magnificent red rock scenery than on a Vetrix Maxi-Scooter. You'll experience more on a Vetrix Maxi Scooter. It rides like a motorcycle with a top speed of 62mph, acceleration from 0 to 50 in just 6.8 seconds. Stop by The Electric Toy Store to take your pick of fun electric toys!

#4 Go WILD at Out of Africa Wildlife Park

Ride into the Serenghetti to feed giraffes, zebras, ostriches, wildebeests & more or enjoy their famous Tiger Splash show where the park's prize tigers play with their Trainers jumping into the pool. You've never seen anything like it.
Pick up a free copy of Kudos - they usually have a coupon in there for $2 off admission.

#5 Tee off at one of the most spectacular golf courses in America, Oak Creek Country Club.

You'll have a hard time keeping your eye on the ball golfing this magnificent award-winning course. When you're done, enjoy lunch at Mulligan's Grille on the Greene overlooking a beautiful pond. They've got "gourmet comfort food" that the locals rave about.
This par 72, 18 hole championship golf course was designed by the famous father and son team of Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Robert Trent Jones Jr., masterfully arranged in the grandeur of red rock splendor. The course consists of 145 acres, including three lakes.

#6 Head up Oak Creek Canyon to Slide Rock State Park & Grasshopper Point to cool off by Oak Creek.
Slide Rock State Park is by far one of Sedona's most popular attractions. Who needs a water park when you can slip and slide down a natural red rock waterslide carved into Oak Creek? Do some cliff-diving into beautiful pools of water, sunbathe on a bed of red rocks. Ah, that is the life!

If you're a little more adventurous, stop at Grasshopper Point and climb your way up to some brave and bold cliff-diving into a deep pool below.

When you're done, cast out a line and fish for some fresh local trout creekside or at the Rainbow Trout Farm. At the Trout Farm, you're guaranteed to catch one and then you can even cook it right then and there! The whole family can enjoy a picnic in this magical setting, tasting the fruits of your labor. Now that's FRESH fish!
#7 Experience the Real "Out West"!

Go on a horseback ride through the real desert of Arizona and finish it off with an authentic cowboy cookout at a real working cattle ranch, M Diamond Ranch. Cowboys serenade you by starlight - this is one to write home about!

#8 1st Friday Evening at the Galleries

On the first Friday of every month, the Sedona Gallery Association hosts the "First Friday Evening in the Galleries" event with artists receptions, wine and hors deourves at Sedona's finest art galleries. Mix and mingle with your favorite artists learning more about their inspiration and artistic process.
For more information go to http://www.sedonagalleryassociation.com/.

#9 Hike the Red Rocks!
Bell Rock Trail and West Fork Trail

I recommend you do this hike at sunset when it cools off and you can witness a spectacular Arizona sunset from the top of the bell. Wildflowers line Scenic Highway 179 leading to this easy hike where you'll get up close and personal with one of Sedona's most unique and well-known rock formations.
Our favorite Sedona hike is by far the Westfork Trail in Oak Creek Canyon. About halfway up the Canyon to Flagstaff, this mellow little hike criss-crosses Oak Creek for a total of 11 miles. The first 3 are a great "out and back" as you walk at the bottom of towering red rock cliffs, hopping stones to cross the creek back and forth, back and forth. Kick off your shoes and dip your feet in to cool off. If you're more adventurous, continue past the 3 mile point and you'll feel like you're the only human on the planet discovering "The Call of the Canyon" for the very first time.

#10 Day Trips Around the State

Sedona is centrally located within driving distance to the Grand Canyon, Jerome, Prescott, Flagstaff, many ancient ruins, State Parks and historical landmarks. Pack up the car and travel to Montezuma's Castle & Montezuma's Well (30 min. from Sedona) to get a real sense of this region's original settlers. Don't miss the Grand Canyon (1.5-2 hrs from Sedona), of course, and on the way stop to explore the famous Route 66 through Flagstaff (30-45 min. from Sedona). Jerome (30 min. from Sedona) was once a booming copper-mining town, now its a quaint hillside town where you'll discover unique art galleries, shops and restaurants like The Haunted Hamburger. Prescott or "Preskitt" as we locals call it was the original capitol of Arizona, home to plenty of Arizona history.

Sedona Soul Adventures' "Bali Sacred Spirit" Journey 9/19 - 10/2

Sedona Soul Adventures' "Bali Sacred Spirit" Journey
September 19 to October 2, 2009

Last Chance to Join this Remarkable Journey!

From Owners Tom & Debra Margrave:

Our Bali Sacred Spirit journey is coming up soon, but there is still time for you to join us - IF - you act now! What will you experience on the Bali Sacred Spirit Tour? Well, here is an overview:

First, prepare yourself for a thoroughly life-changing journey. You will be part of a small group of like-minded seekers and open-hearted spiritual adventurers who bond quickly and deeply as we travel to ancient temples, meditate, explore, play, shop, eat, dance and celebrate.

You will find that Bali is not only a place of immense physical beauty - lush and green and tropical - but Bali also has a vibrant, dynamic culture filled with artistry and creative expression as well as a profoundly devotional spirituality. As you discover the beauty of the island's temples, its people and its landscapes; as you are immersed in a culture where awareness of, and devotion to Spirit permeates every aspect of life, you may very well experience subtle but powerful shifts in your own awareness and relationship to the Divine.

During your stay, as you resonate with Bali more and more, you will find yourself slowing down, relaxing, opening and unwinding. You will experience yourself spontaneously entraining to the more natural Balinese rhythms and pace of life. You may even give yourself permission to indulge in the pampering and sensual pleasures of the many heavenly little spas set amidst the tranquility of rice paddies and fields. Where else but in Bali are massage, pedicures and manicures, body wraps and facials taken to the level of an art form?

You will be amazed and delighted with what you experience during your time in Bali. You will come home with a deep appreciation for the people, the culture and the land. You will find a deeper appreciation for yourself as you realize that Balil has subtly but deeply opened you to a new and more lovingly alive version of yourself.

"This sacred journey to Bali with Tom & Debra was magical. Their preparations allowed me to "drink in" the essence of the Hindu temples and the "feel" of the Balinese culture and surroundings. Nirvana has followed me home."

Canyon Lands Art Exhibit and Demonstrations at Sedona Arts Center

SEDONA, Ariz. (July 29, 2009)

Beat the heat on First Friday with an evening of poetry and fine art, starting at 4:00pm in the Sculpture Garden. After an hour of delightful poetry, move inside for the opening reception of the Arts Center's new August Exhibit, Canyon Lands. The exhibit features four local artists who have captured the flavor and beauty of Northern Arizona: Susan Kliewer, sculptor and painter, David Haskell, plein-air oil painter, Mariann Leahy, clay artist, and Richard Daley, photographer. The show opens with the reception on Friday and runs through September 2nd. Open daily from 10am to 5pm.

At 6:00pm the winner of the People’s Choice Award from the 2009 Members Open Exhibition will be announced. Ballots were cast throughout the entire show, which ran from July 3 to August 5th. The winning piece will be on display through the month of August.

Susan Kliewer is a native of Southern California, but has made Arizona her home for almost 40 years. She spent five of those years at Marble Canyon Trading Post in a remote area of Northern Arizona, adjacent to the Navajo Reservation. A painter since the age of ten, Susan turned to sculpting in 1987, after working in an art casting foundry for ten years. Susan often uses her Native American friends and relatives as models to capture that special intimacy which is a hallmark of her work.

In 1993 Susan won a competition to create a monument of Sedona Schnebly. The ten-foot high sculpture was installed in front of the Sedona Library. Since then, many more monuments have been commissioned and installed in the United States and Europe. Susan is currently working on twelve two-thirds, life-sized sculptures for the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Park on Kauai, Hawaii depicting a Navajo family settlement.

David Haskell, another California native who has made Sedona his home, began painting in oils at an early age. Although he worked his way through college as an illustrator, he chose a career in resource management with the National Park Service. He painted occasionally on commission until he retired from the NPS in 1999. Since then he has been painting full time.

Although best known for his dynamic paintings of the Grand Canyon, Sedona and Monument Valley, he takes frequent painting expeditions to other locations including the Rocky Mountains and the central California coast. He states, "My paintings are the result of experiences in the field that have inspired my sense of awe and appreciation for the incredible beauty of the Western landscape. I am particularly drawn to moving water and the power of vast open spaces."

Mariann Leahy, was born in Chicago, but has lived in Sedona for 10 years. She is a talented clay artist who is inspired by myths and symbols that depict the emergence and mystery of life's energy. Her works, a blend of human and animal motifs, combine artistic experience with profound respect for nature and images from the past. With clay as her medium of choice, she has a natural tactile connection with the earth.

After researching stories that have been influenced by the rich cultural traditions and ruins located throughout the Southwest, Mariann draws the stories in glaze on fired clay. Each piece is then painted with many additional coats of glaze, which bring alive the brilliant colors during the second firing process. Her hand-built pieces echo ancient motifs in a contemporary style.

Richard Daley is an award-wining fine art photographer living in Sedona, Arizona. His landscape and nature photography is strongly influenced by the elements of design using line and form, light and shadow, complementary and contrasting color. He uses the principles of Zen in much of his nature photography to capture the essence of the subject, celebrate the ordinary, and invite the viewer to a deeper relationship with nature.

The work of each of these fine artists will draw you into a different experience of the Canyon Lands - with a view of this corner of the world through their eyes that has been captured on canvas, on film, in bronze and in clay. The artists will be providing free demonstrations during the month of August. Call for dates and times.

The reception runs from 5:00 to 8:00pm - no admission. Everyone is invited to enjoy the art and to meet and mingle with the artists. It will be an evening well worth the effort. The Sedona Arts Center is located at the north end of Uptown Sedona, on the left just before entering Oak Creek Canyon. For more information, please call the Gallery at 928-282-3865, the Administrative Office 928-282-3809, or visit our Website at http://www.sedonaartscenter.com/

National Day of the Cowboy Sedona Celebration 7/25

Saddle up for a wild ride this Saturday July 25th and hold on tight for a gun slingin', rope trickin', good grubbin' day long celebration of the National Day of the Cowboy right here in Sedona. Mainstreet Sedona (also known as Uptown Sedona) will head back to it's roots celebrating all things cowboy. After all, the Cowboy Artists of America started at a table in the back room of the ole' Cowboy Club! We know all about cowboys 'round these parts!

The day starts out with a parade down Jordan Rd. at 10:30 and then activities throughout Uptown all day long from bull riding to gunfights, ice cream tasting to...."Rodeo Rub-downs?"

According to this Press Release from Los Abrigados' Nate Hansen, the National Day of the Cowboy is going to be a day of fun AND relaxation!

No Butts About It, Rodeo Rub-Downs
During National Day of the Cowboy

Sedona, Arizona – Saturday, July 25, from noon to 4 p.m. Sedona Spa will be on hand – no pun intended – to provide professional massages for anyone interested during a day meant to celebrate our nation’s cowboys. Located next to this year’s mechanical bull, a highlight for the Celebration of the National Cowboy, Sedona Spa masseuses will be providing Rodeo Rub-Downs for $5.00 … that’s no bull!

What makes these massages special isn’t only the relaxation that follows but that the $5.00 also gives the people in the chair $20.00 off their next visit to Sedona Spa! It would be a pain in the butt NOT to take advantage of this offer. So, grab the bull by its horns, it’s something we expect everyone to jump on … and stay on as long as they can.

Get bucked … then get a Rodeo Rub-Down, thanks to Sedona Spa, located in Los Abrigados Resort & Spa, 160 Portal Lane. For reservations, call the Sedona Spa at 282-5108.

Press Release from Mainstreet Sedona:

National Day of the Cowboy is Saturday, July 25th will be celebrated with a FREE community event on from 10:30 am to 8:00 pm along “Main Street” (State Route 89A) and Jordan Road in Uptown Sedona. Come enjoy “a whole lot of cowboy goin’s on” on this day designated by Presidential proclamation to celebrate our cowboy heritage!

Start your morning with our Cowboy Parade at 10:30 down Jordan Road from Navahopi to Mesquite Avenue. Master of Ceremonies John Conway of audioworxx will announce the entries, including horses and cowboys, mounted shooters and mountain men, wild women and stuntmen, Cavalry and Rangers plus jeeps, stagecoaches and a carriage. The Special prizes will be awarded for the best of the riders, mounted posses or groups and the wagons or stagecoaches.

Gunfights begin at high noon in Cowboy Plaza, along with gunslingin’, rope tricks and whip crackin’ performances throughout the afternoon until 6 pm. Joey Dillon, three time world champion gunslinger, will demonstrate his unique gun handling skills. Throughout the day at Cowboy Plaza expect to see shoot out skits, rope tricks and whip cracking performed by local residents Rock Holliday, Mike Dearden, Natalie Kurz and Rena Dearden. "Rock" (a.k.a. Gene Kurz) is also a cowboy actor and Wild West performer.

Remember to stop back at 4:00 p.m. for the Spirit of the West outfit contest at Cowboy Club Plaza. Judges will award three prizes in each of two categories: Youth 15 & under and Adults 16 & over.

Throughout the day and evening, there are several activities, demonstrations and live entertainment to enjoy:

Wander south on “Main Street” (State Route 89A) to Cahill Leather and stop at True West Magazine’s booth for a complimentary issue. Then take a walk on the wild side…. head down to Cheers Plaza between noon and 4:00 pm to challenge the Mechanical Bull. Tickets are only $5 each and there’s sure to be plenty of action there.

Wander back up “Main Street” and look for the Roasted Corn wagon provided by Sally’s Mesquite Grill & BBQ in front of Joe Wilcox Stagecoach Emporium. Further on at the “Mid-block crosswalk” Plaza (near the Joe Beeler statue) you can enjoy a tasty treat at the Grace’s Heavenly Ices booth. Take notice of the sculpture depicting Joe Beeler - an incredibly talented artist and Sedona resident. He was a founding member of the Cowboy Artists of America, organized right here in Uptown Sedona. It’s a great spot to snap a family photo.

As you walk along “Main Street”, keep your eyes open for our own cultural heritage displayed in commemoratives of Western movies filmed in Sedona. These Hands through History plaques made of red granite are embedded in red rock concrete with the handprints or boot prints of the actors. Look for them at Matterhorn Shoppes and again at Canyon Breeze Plaza, Orchards Plaza and Cowboy Plaza too.

Across the street at Sinagua Plaza near Joe Wilcox Western Wear you’ll find cowboy craftsmen showcasing their talent from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Steffon Dalberg of Earthwalkers from Cornville will demonstrate his leather working skills on custom made footwear and his custom boots will be available to purchase. You can visit with Stan Irick of JMK Designs from New Mexico, demonstrating antler art. Stan will be selling his hand-crafted items too.

Make sure to stop and listen to live western music by Oak Creek Boys from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. There is plenty of room to dance if you want or just sit and enjoy since they’re performing outside at Canyon Breeze Plaza near the Canyon Breeze Shops and Restaurant.

Come watch the cowboys and horses on parade, hoot and holler for the gunfights and such, chow down on good food, put on your dancing boots and enjoy the local western band, take in some great cowboy art, have a chat with the cowboy craftsmen at work, and show off your western outfit (new or old) at the contest.

This event is possible because of the generous support of businesses, organizations and our media partners, plus volunteer efforts from Gene Kurz and Sedona Main Street Program. Huge thanks go to our Platinum Star sponsors: Sedona Peace of Mind Home Watch Service, Inc., Red Rock Western Jeep Tours, Joe Wilcox Western Wear & Joe Wilcox Stagecoach Emporium, Cowboy Corral Gang, and A Day in the West. Special thanks to Gold Star Sponsor - Los Abrigados Resort & Spa and to Silver Star Sponsors - Sedona Trolley and Florange Signs & Designs. We’re grateful for the help of the City of Sedona, Sedona Police Department & Community Police Alliance and Sedona Volunteer Park Rangers.

Come celebrate National Day of the Cowboy with us. Join in recognizing cowboy character and value: honesty, integrity, courage, compassion, respect, patriotism and a strong work ethic.
